Tempe business wants to save Valley pool owners 2 billion gallons of water
Pool filters treated by FilterClean
FilterClean, one of Local First Arizona’s most recent Certified Green Businesses, is now offering mobile pick-up and drop-off services to reach its goal of saving Valley pool owners as much as 2 billion gallons of water each year.
Pool filters are supposed to be cleaned every few months, and most homeowners do so by hosing them down in their backyards. But that water then goes to waste.
FilterClean estimates a homeowner uses as much as 2,500 gallons per cleaning to rinse pool filters. Hotels, schools, gyms and other large pool owners may use even more.
FilterClean’s closed-loop cleaning system not only saves water but also provides superior cleaning results that extend the life of the filters, said owner Page Gray. The proprietary machine filters and treats the water it uses to clean the cartridges, reusing it each cycle instead of flushing it away.

"At FilterClean, we are deeply committed to protecting our precious water resources," Gray said. "By launching this initiative, we hope to not only raise awareness about the importance of water conservation but also demonstrate tangible solutions that can make a significant difference."
FilterClean services all customers, including residential, commercial, municipal, schools and more.
A certified environmentally sustainable business
FilterClean earned Local First’s Arizona Green Business Certification in 2023, on top of becoming the first Water Efficient Tempe Certified Business.
The Local First program offers businesses throughout the state an affordable, self-guided way to evaluate their current sustainability practices and improve them. Hands-on consultation from our sustainability team enhances businesses’ ability to reduce their environmental impact and monthly bills, while gaining public recognition for their efforts.
From businesses just starting to make changes to those that are looking to take their sustainability efforts to the next level, the certification provides business owners with a custom toolkit full of best practices and ideas that can positively affect their bottom lines by focusing on energy consumption, water conservation, waste diversion, pollution prevention, transportation emissions and stormwater and wastewater practices.
Reducing landfill waste
FilterClean touts its services as a way to not only save water in the desert but also to reduce garbage in our landfills.
The deep clean provided by the company extends the life of pool filters, Gray said, leading to fewer being bought and thrown away. This also means financial savings for pool owners. Currently, about 166,000 pool filters end up in our landfills each year, taking 450 years to break down, he estimates.
"Our goal is not only to save water but also to inspire a broader movement towards sustainability," Gray said. "We believe that by working together, we can make a meaningful impact on our environment and create a more sustainable future for generations to come."
