Cheers to Arizona: Meet the Sonoran Sipper
The desert may get hot, but Arizonans know how to keep it cool: with a frosty pint that tastes like home. Enter the Sonoran Sipper: a vibrant, locally-sourced collaboration between Local First Arizona and O.H.S.O. Brewery. This is more than a beer. It’s a love letter to our desert, our farmers, our food system and our home.
It’s a lush experience from the first pour: a brilliant pink hue from hibiscus grown in Phoenix soil, the citrusy zing of lime and a crisp, refreshing finish that makes every sip a celebration of place. The Sonoran Sipper was designed to be the ultimate drinkable beer — flavorful, refreshing and unmistakably Arizona.
The Origin Story
The Sonoran Sipper was born from a simple goal: brew a beer that tastes like home while strengthening the food system that sustains us.
Malted barley comes from Sossaman Farms in Queen Creek (you may recognize Sossaman from the street name!), a 100-year-old family farm now evolving into the 21st century by opening Homestead Malting, adding malt processing power that means beer can go from seed to stein entirely in the Valley.
The lively magenta hibiscus is sourced from Shamba AZ, an urban farm in North Phoenix known for ultra-nutritious microgreens.
The sourcing magic was made possible by Sun Produce Cooperative, a local food aggregator and distributor working since 2017 to increase access to healthy local food, particularly for underserved children and adults, while growing the capacity and viability of smaller-acreage Arizona Farms.
Together, these partners represent what’s possible when we choose local: flavor, sustainability and resilience.
Why Drink Local?
“When we don’t support local, family farms disappear and give way to large corporate farm operations, and consumers lose sight of where their food comes from”
Every pint of Sonoran Sipper is more than a beverage — it’s a statement of pride, purpose and place. Choosing local means:
Keeping Arizona’s dollars working for Arizona’s communities.
Backing family farms and small businesses that give our towns their soul.
Defying corporate consolidation by lifting up independent growers and brewers.
Tasting the difference — fresher, bolder and rooted right here at home.
By embracing ingredients that are adapted to grow well in our desert heat without excessive water needs, O.H.S.O. is proving sustainability and flavor go hand-in-hand. Waste from brewing is even diverted to local farms as feed, closing the sustainability loop.
Designed With the Desert in Mind
Every detail of the Sonoran Sipper tells a story, even the can. Designed by Local First Arizona graphic designer Jared Wardle, the can bursts with the same turquoise and orange palette that defines the Devour Good Food brand, echoing the hues of desert skies and setting suns.
Wardle wanted the design to reflect the beauty and resilience of the landscape that inspired the beer:
“The desert is often seen as an inhospitable place, but it’s actually full of life — a cycle of growth, decay and renewal that makes our home vibrant and alive.”
Built from the silhouettes of native flora and fauna that comprise the deconstructed sugar skull, the can is a visual tribute to the ecosystems and communities that sustain us.
