One Water Brewing Showcase: Local Breweries Reinvent the Taste of Sustainability
There has never been a beer festival featuring only craft beers brewed with recycled water. That’s about to change.
On Nov. 8 and 9, during the first weekend of Canal Convergence, visitors to the Scottsdale Waterfront will have the opportunity to sample 10 different beers, all made by local Arizona breweries from potable reuse water during the One Water Brewing Showcase. This event within the event is two nights only at the beginning of the 10-day run of Canal Convergence | Water + Art + Light.
For the Showcase, Scottsdale Public Art is partnering with Scottsdale Water, the City’s water department, which, in September, became the first water agency in the state of Arizona — and one of only three in the nation — permitted to treat recycled water for potable use. This groundbreaking permit establishes a model for cities across Arizona to begin working toward reusing precious water resources for future and long-term water sustainability.
But why beer? It’s all a part of changing the public perception around drinking recycled water. We’re betting that some of you just might find the idea of drinking recycled water in the form of beer a bit more palatable.
That’s why we’re working with 11 local breweries to create 10 different beers for the Showcase (obviously, two of the breweries are partnering up in the name of spreading the news about recycled water). Each of the brews will be made from potable reuse water delivered directly from Scottsdale’s Advanced Water Treatment Plant. In fact, the breweries already have the water and are working their magic.
The One Water Brewing Showcase is free to attend and will feature five beers each night. You can purchase individual, full-size draft beers or sampler flights to taste all five. Canal Convergence and Scottsdale Water are proud to have the following breweries participating in the One Water Brewing Showcase:
Desert Monks Brewing Co. (Gilbert)
Fate Brewing Company (Scottsdale and Tempe)
Flying Basset Brewing (Gilbert)
Freak’N Brewing Company (Peoria) collaborating with Dubina Brewing Co. (Glendale)
Mother Bunch Brewing Company (Phoenix)
North Mountain Brewing (Phoenix)
O.H.S.O. Brewery + Distillery (Gilbert, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, and Scottsdale)
Uncle Bear’s Brewery (Mesa, Queen Creek, and Phoenix)
Walter Station Brewery (Phoenix)
Wren House Brewing Co. (Phoenix)
Andrew Bauman, head brewer for Uncle Bear’s Brewery told us he was “thrilled” to be part of the One Water Brewing Showcase because of just how important water is to beer.
“Although all water is recycled water, we're impressed by the incredible system Scottsdale has implemented to make the cleanest water possible,” Bauman said. “The future of water for Arizona and for the next generations, is happening right now and it's awesome to get to be a part of this project.”
The showcase is part of Canal Convergence’s sustainability efforts as we promote resource conservation and pursue our goal of becoming a zero-waste event. Learn more about our efforts at CanalConvergence.com/sustainability.
Canal Convergence is a free, 10-day, public art event from Nov. 8–17, 2019, at the Scottsdale Waterfront. This year’s event follows the theme of “The Story of Water” and will feature numerous large-scale, light-based installations, many of which will have interactive components. In addition to the artworks, Canal Convergence features live performances, food vendors, a beer and wine garden, educational artist talks and all-ages workshops and activities throughout the event. It is organized by Scottsdale Public Art, a branch of the nonprofit Scottsdale Arts.
The Advanced Water Treatment Plant at the Scottsdale Water Campus is one of the largest and most advanced water recycling facilities in the world. Recognized by the WaterReuse Research Foundation and the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence as one of the world’s most innovative water purification projects, the AWT produces 20 million gallons per day of ultra-pure water and celebrated 20 years of successful operation in 2018.
