Juneteenth in the Valley: A Celebration of Freedom, Culture and Community Power
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved people — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. What began as a Texas-based tradition has become a nationwide celebration of freedom, reflection and Black excellence.
In Phoenix, Juneteenth has grown into a tapestry of community-centered celebrations, shaped by the distinct voices and neighborhoods of the city. From historic Eastlake Park to cultural institutions across the Valley, Black Arizonans and allies gather each June to honor the past, elevate the present and imagine a more just future.
This year’s celebrations reflect the dynamic evolution of Juneteenth in the Valley: part remembrance, part revival and all community. Here are a few standout events hosted or supported by Local First Arizona partners and members that highlight what makes Juneteenth in Phoenix so powerful and unique:
Desert Botanical Garden: Reclaiming the Past, Reshaping the Future
Taking place on Tuesday, June 10 from 6 - 9 p.m., the Garden’s Juneteenth Evening Festival is a celebration of Black culture, artistry and excellence. This year’s theme — "Reclaiming the Past, Remembering Black Voices, Reshaping the Future" — comes to life through a range of interactive experiences. Attendees can enjoy:
A Buy Black Marketplace featuring the OneMillion Entrepreneurs collective
Live music, dance, DJ sets and cultural performances
Art-making stations, crown crafting and games for kids
A Kids’ Corner with family activities and a youth essay contest
Live food demos showcasing ingredients grown in Arizona and inspired by the work of George Washington Carver
Culinary offerings including authentic soul food and local vendors
Free with a Community Day reservation, the festival offers a deep and joyful celebration of Black identity and innovation.
Archwood x Eastlake Park: A Liberation Soundtrack
Held on Thursday, June 19 from 12 - 9 p.m. in the heart of Phoenix’s historic Black community, the Archwood Exchange and Eastlake Park “The Family Reunion Juneteenth Celebration” is as local and grassroots as it gets. Hosted by BlackNet AZ, BLM Phoenix Metro and Cactus and Culture, the all-day event features:
Horse petting area with @flyingcrows, games and family activities
DJ Pootiecat providing the soundtrack
A fierce and flavorful AZ Chicken Wing Showdown
Cocktails and mixology by @siptale
Evening storytelling and performance showcase, Freedom Music: A Soundtrack of Liberation, curated by @theblkmuseaffect and hosted by @centered.phx — a revival-style event of powerful storytelling, soul-stirring vocals and community reflection
Phoenix Art Museum: Art, Poetry & Joy
The PhxArt Juneteenth Celebration invites the community to explore a cultural and artistic Juneteenth experience in the heart of the city. With $10 admission all day Thursday, June 19, guests can explore exhibitions like The World of Anna Sui 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., then stay for special evening programming from 5 – 8 p.m., including:
Docent-led tours of the museum’s highlights

Downtown Tempe Juneteenth Block Party
The City of Tempe is throwing its biggest Juneteenth event yet! Taking place Saturday, June 14 from 7 - 11 p.m., the all-ages Juneteenth Block Party is themed around Freedom of Expression with highlights including:
Live performances from Teri Tobin, Urban Poet, DJ Panic and DJ AKSHEN
BBQ from Kingpin, soul food from 28 Still Cooking and sweet treats from Flav-Oh’s
A retro roller rink featuring the Zoni Girls, a Hip-Hop Barber Battle and Spades & Dominos lounge
A pop-up library and creative spaces hosted by Tempe Public Library, plus the RichKat Mobile Cigar Lounge

Arizona Heritage Center: Roots and Remembrance
In partnership with ASU Library Black Collections, the Black Family Genealogy and History Society and ByDesign Entertainment, the Arizona Heritage Center will host its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The free, daylong event includes:
Lectures, songs and storytelling
Workshops on genealogy and family history
Cultural activities and limited refreshments
