Built With Intention: LGBTQ+-Friendly Businesses and Inclusive Communities Across Arizona
From queer-owned bookstores and restaurants to affirming healthcare organizations and safe community spaces, these Arizona businesses and organizations are building belonging with intention.
The concept of inclusion has never veered from its actual purpose, despite recent attempts to malign or politicize its meaning. Inclusion, by definition, is the act of including. In a broader social context, UNESCO defines inclusion as a practice that ensures everyone — regardless of background, identity or ability — feels empowered, valued and respected so they can fully participate in society.
For LGBTQ+ individuals and other historically marginalized communities, inclusion often takes shape through tangible community spaces: affirming healthcare providers, welcoming local businesses, supportive gathering spaces and communities where people feel safe being fully themselves.
Across Arizona, LGBTQ+-friendly businesses and inclusive communities are helping create local economies rooted not just in commerce, but in belonging.
This guide highlights some of the local queer-owned businesses, affirming organizations and inclusive Arizona communities where advocacy and community are deeply intertwined.
Why Inclusive Community Spaces Matter
Inclusive businesses foster empowerment simply by extending a genuine welcome to people who have historically faced exclusion and threats. Sometimes, inclusion looks as unassuming — and as revolutionary — as:
the conversations happening in one of the nation’s few remaining lesbian bars
affirming healthcare built around trust, dignity and safety
the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans at a mission-driven Tempe café
the warmth of a vibrant Puerto Rican restaurant in Phoenix
sticky marshmallow treats shared at a welcoming Gilbert dessert shop
a book hand-picked just for you at a beloved Tucson bookstore
None of these experiences exist in isolation. They are the result of people intentionally building spaces where others feel safe, seen and valued — often in response to years of exclusion, stigma or invisibility.
Across Arizona, that work takes many forms, from nightlife and hospitality to healthcare and grassroots advocacy.
LGBTQ+ Advocacy
“Once you start attacking one marginalized community, you attack them all. I think there’s more of a need for safe spaces now.”
“It’s definitely a necessity because of mindsets,” Audrey Corley, owner of Boycott Bar, said of the lesbian establishment she opened more than 20 years ago.
At one point, Boycott Bar was one of roughly 200 lesbian bars across the country. Corley opened the bar because there was a need for spaces where LGBTQ+ people could gather openly, safely and authentically. Located in Phoenix’s Melrose District, the bar has become known for drag performances, dancing, community advocacy and creating a space where people can simply exist as themselves.
Over the years, Corley has seen progress for LGBTQ+ communities expand — and, more recently, face renewed political pressure.
“With this administration, we’re getting set back and that’s the hard part,” Corley said.
Queer-Affirming Healthcare in Arizona
Prisma CEO, Jessyca Leach
One of the clearest examples of inclusion shaping participation can be found in healthcare, where trust between patients and providers directly impacts whether people feel safe seeking care. Prisma Community Care understands that deeply. Founded in 1990 as Phoenix Body Positive — and later becoming Southwest Center — the organization originally focused on supporting individuals living with HIV during the height of the AIDS epidemic, when misinformation and stigma often prevented people from receiving proper care.
Today, Prisma Community Care provides whole-person wellness services with a strong emphasis on affirming LGBTQ+ healthcare and community trust.
“A lot of the agencies that do the work that we do aren’t queer identifying,” CEO Jessyca Leach said. “We opted to not do that. That’s not who we are. Instead, we went bigger.”
