Environmental changemakers: Welcome April new Business Coalition members

It’s good to be ‘green’!

Local First Arizona is a champion for local businesses leading the charge toward environmental sustainability.

If you’re just starting to make changes or looking to take your efforts to the next level, the Local First Arizona Green Business Certification provides your business with a self-guided, custom toolkit full of best practices that can positively affect your bottom line by reducing energy consumption, conserving water, diverting waste, cutting vehicle pollution and more.

Or sign up for our Green Business Boot Camp, a hands-on, comprehensive seven-session workshop that assists Arizona-owned businesses and nonprofits with planning, financing and implementing ideas to reduce power, water, transportation and trash costs by 20% or more.

In honor of Earth Day, learn about some of our members that have completed these programs or are currently going through the process:

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. uses barley from Sinagua Malt. Based in the Verde Valley, Sinagua works with local farmers to shift from traditional summer crops like corn and alfalfa to barley, a late winter/spring crop. This crop-switching results in less water diverted from the Verde River during high-demand, low-streamflow periods, leaving more water for people and wildlife.

Goodmans Interior Structures’ partnership with the Herman Miller furniture manufacturer has contributed to its ongoing commitment to sustainability. In 1953, Herman Miller's founder pledged the company would “be a good corporate neighbor by being a good steward of the environment." As a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council and an active participant in creating the LEED protocol, Herman Miller has helped carry the concept of environmental stewardship across industries and around the world.

Hotel Congress has been implementing green initiatives and forging new partnerships to further its sustainability efforts in downtown Tucson. By partnering with various government and nonprofit organizations, Hotel Congress has drastically reduced plastic waste, increased reuse and recycling of materials otherwise destined for a landfill and helped stimulate greater awareness of the efforts that can be made in the Tucson community to move toward a more sustainable future.

JoyRidesAZ’s mission is to provide eco-friendly city tour experiences that exceed expectations. They wear their Certified Green Business badge with pride by being recycle-friendly, converting light fixtures, minimizing water usage and reducing their carbon footprint by using electric vehicles.

Ponvel Products offers eco-friendly cocopeat products for hydroponics, horticulture, permaculture and floriculture, promoting the health of organic plants by improving aerability, drainage and moisture retention. Products are biodegradable and range from grow bags to coir discs in customizable sizes.

Sole Sports Running Zone believes that contributing to a culture of stewardship of our natural resources is a basic responsibility of being in business. In addition to their recycling practices, LED lighting and reverse-osmosis water machine for staff and customers, Sole Sports Running Zone also collects used shoes for Sneakers 4 Good, used gel packets, drink-mix bags and other nutritional packaging for TerraCycle and cardboard shoe boxes for The Art Resource Center.
