It’s Poppin’ at the 6th Street Market in Downtown Tempe
Rain or shine, it’s a poppin’ good time at the 6th Street Market in Downtown Tempe every Sunday in season. There’s LIVE music by local performers, coffee, food, snacks, eye-catching wares and gift ideas and people bring their dogs! It’s a great way to spend a Sunday, walking around, checking out the vendors, having a little nosh and a drink, and having fun with your friends and family. But for foodies, the 6th Street Market is a mecca!
First off, the market is 100% local. Every weekend. All the vendors are juried and hand-picked to make sure they’re making and selling local goods – whether they’re grown, baked, cooked or created right here in AZ. From Amadio Ranch’s farm-fresh produce to their mouthwatering homemade pies, they’re a weekly addiction alone! And in 2020, the market is hosting several pop-up events, many focusing on food. The online schedule shows eight pop-ups at the time of this writing, with three that are a must for Arizona foodies:
On January 19th, 2020 there’s a “Pastry Throw Down” featuring all kinds of beautiful baked goods from cookies to bread to buns and Viennoiserie (that’s yeasted baked goods like scrumptious brioche, croissants, Danish pastries and the like). The event listing promises that vendors will be bringing their baked goods “A” game, and we’re all invited to taste, enjoy and vote for our faves. Will def be there!
On February 16th, there’s an “Asian Street Food Pop-Up” boasting delicious street eats from China to Korea, so fans of noodles, dumplings, kimchee and bao buns will not want to miss this Pacific Rim pop-up, come February 2020!
On Sunday April 5th there’s a bangin’ season finale featuring a “BOBA Sip & Shop” as the market winds down until next fall. There’ll be boba and bubble tea drinks on the menu. And if you’re feeling guilty about consuming any of these bodacious beverages, OrangeTheory & Pure Barre will be on hand with their monthly First Sunday Fitness pop-ups, so it all cancels out in the end, right?
In addition to the foodie pop-ups, there are pop-ups for dogs and monthly fitness pop-ups just adding an extra touch of flair, pizazz and something special to do on any given Sunday. The only Sunday the market doesn’t take place is when there’s a big special event going on in Downtown Tempe, like the 43rd Annual Spring Tempe Festival of the Arts March 27 – 29.
With FREE parking on Sundays, beautiful weather in store all winter/spring and a motto that includes “Local Purveyors, Produce & Artisans” -- you’ve gotta love that we have this local gem right in our own backyard. The market is so locally focused because of its mission – to engage the community. According to Julie Kent, market manager and Director of Placemaking for Downtown Tempe, which organizes the market, “We organize and host this market weekly for the community. It’s a relaxed and lovely place to spend a few hours strolling locally made goods, shopping and supporting local merchants and meeting up with your neighbors and friends, old and new. We do this for the community. This market is community.”
