SCALE UP: 2018 Pilot

The SCALE UP Phase One pilot ran between March 1 - June 30, 2018 and proved to be a successful platform for collaboration, education, project planning and budgetary savings. In April 2019, Local First Arizona was awarded the Tucson Electric Power Go Green Business Development Partner Award for our program.

Delectables Catering and Venue

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, Delectables Catering and Venue completed the following actions:

  • Installed 3M NV15 window film to reduce heat and glare

  • Increased inspection and maintenance of property to catch leaks and maintain efficient function

  • Replaced numerous fixtures and appliances to increase facility efficiency

The benefits of these actions include:

  • Reduced heat generated and cooling needed to maintain a comfortable space

  • Reduced utility costs, particularly water and energy

  • Greater awareness of property needs and common areas requiring repair

Now, their next steps include:

  • Educating future tenants about sustainability practices

  • Replace remaining kitchen light fixtures as needed

  • Continuing to participate in TEP’s solar shares program

The Gloo Factory

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, The Gloo Factory completed the following actions:

  • Installed energy efficient alternatives such as LED lights

  • Used proper insulation techniques to increase the efficiency of a new building

The benefits of these actions include:

  • Reduced energy costs as a result of more efficient temperature stabilization and lighting

  • Reduced water costs as a result of collecting and repurposing rainwater

Now, their next steps include:

  • Creating a closed loop for reusing major sources of waste (paper and PVC signs)

  • Expanding water storage capabilities to increase the efficiency of the rainwater collection system

Borderlands Brewing Co.

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, Borderlands Brewing Co. completed the following actions:

  • Planned a system to involve employees and customers in sustainability through a Green Team

  • Updated equipment to more efficient models through collaboration with utility companies and their landlord

  • Used strategic marketing to involve customers in green thinking

The benefits of these actions include:

  • Increased collaboration between team and community members to continue developing sustainably

  • Lowered utility costs from increased efficiency in equipment and practices

  • Higher customer engagement in green thinking as a result of strategic marketing

Now, their next steps include:

  • Continued utilization of Green Team to come up with and implement new ideas and strategies

Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona completed the following actions:

  • Explored the possibility of an insulation audit for the roof, walls, and heating/cooling lines

  • Explored cost benefits of swamp cooler replacement/upgrades with a local expert

  • Explored potential employee benefits and incentives for alternative transportation

The benefits of these actions include:

  • More comprehensive understanding of options for increasing building efficiency

  • Bringing employees into consideration for ways to be more sustainable outside of core operations

Now, their next steps include:

  • Performing LED retrofits of all lighting

  • Working with Watershed Management Group to consider redoing parking lots

Pop Cycle

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, Pop Cycle completed the following actions:

  • Updated and continued to maintain a historic building to preserve the historic character of the 4th Avenue District

  • Completed a lighting audit for LED replacements

The benefits of these actions include:

  • A reputation for supporting the local community and its history

  • Lowered utility costs from increased efficiency in building lighting

Now, their next steps include:

  • Filling a hole in an east facing exterior wall to improve heating/cooling efficiency

  • Working with Technicians for Sustainability and Surly Wench to explore the benefits of a solar installation 

  • Lowering the back room lighting fixtures to reduce the number of necessary fixtures

Sonoran Glass School

With the knowledge from SCALE UP and the funding from the Green Revolving Fund, SGS completed the following actions:

  • Replaced studio and office lighting with LEDs

  • Upgraded kiln and furnace to be more thermally efficient 

The benefits of these actions include:

  • Reduced heat generated and cooling needed to maintain a comfortable space

  • Reduced energy costs

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions and localized pollution

  • Engaged customers based on commitment to sustainability 

Now, their next steps include:

  • Install roll up bay doors, shade structures and trees around the building for more energy savings

  • Form Green Team to better engage employees and customers in sustainability

Wholesum Harvest

With the knowledge from SCALE UP, Wholesum Harvest completed the following actions:

  • Reduced air leaks through windows, doors, and walls

  • Replaced two greenhouse swamp coolers with models that are 46% more efficient

  • Installed more efficient toilets and acquired six sink aerators to save 16,000 gallons/month on water, as well as building shade

  • Replaced air handling units in a greenhouse for 20% energy savings

The benefits of these actions include:

  • Reduced energy needs as a result of fewer leaks and more efficient fans

  • Reduced water needs from upgrading of restroom facilities and installation of sink aerators

Now, their next steps include:

  • Continued improvement of reducing heating and cooling needs by reducing air leaks and adding shade

  • Evaluate fleet management and find opportunities to reduce fuel costs and emissions
