Los futuros novios y graduados que entran a la actual ubicación de Rosy's Tuxedos en la Avenida N 75 en Phoenix pueden pensar que solo están obteniendo un traje o un esmoquin, pero los trajes a medida con los que se van vienen con algo invaluable: la confianza de saber que lucirán y se sentirán lo mejor posible en su gran día.
¿A quién deben agradecer estos celebrantes, tan elegantemente vestidos, por sus trajes y tranquilidad? Conozcan al increíble dúo de madre e hija, Rosa Recendez y su hija, Mónica Cortez, graduadas de la 21ª Cohorte del Programa Acelerador de Negocios de Local First Arizona. Actualmente inscritas en la 4ª Cohorte del Programa Ejecutivo de Fuerza Local, juntas están logrando el sueño de toda la vida de Rosa de ser su propia jefa.
Nativa de Zacatecas, México, cuya educación formal terminó en la escuela primaria, Rosa y su esposo Ignacio Ledezma emigraron a Estados Unidos con sus cuatro hijos en busca de una mejor vida. Un primer negocio que ofrecía alteraciones de vestidos, alquiler de trajes y rosarios para eventos especiales se lanzó en 2011, pero tuvo dificultades y cerró en 2014 después de tres años de operaciones. La experiencia, sin embargo, ayudó a confirmar la creencia de Rosa de que la comunidad apoyaría una boutique dedicada a la ropa formal para hombres. Se puso a trabajar ahorrando e invirtiendo en un inventario de trajes y esmóquines, trabajando desde casa para construir su clientela y prepararse para abrir su nueva tienda.
En noviembre de 2017, Rosa pudo abrir una pequeña tienda dentro del Mercado de los Cielos, y un año después, se mudó a un lugar más grande en el Desert Sky Mall. En 2021, la COVID-19 amenazó con cerrar la tienda. Su hija Mónica, que siempre había ayudado en la tienda de manera informal, se unió oficialmente en 2021, poniendo en práctica su título en administración de empresas para mantener el negocio a flote.
Juntas, madre e hija lograron sobrellevar la tormenta de la pandemia, identificando debilidades y adaptando su estrategia comercial para mejor, solo para perder abruptamente su contrato de arrendamiento en la ubicación del Desert Sky Mall en abril de 2023. Este golpe inesperado resultó en la pérdida de clientes y recursos, pero una vez más, se negaron a rendirse. Aplicando las lecciones aprendidas, particularmente en cuanto a la importancia de entender los contratos, reabrieron Rosy's en noviembre de 2023, instalándose en la ubicación en la Avenida 75 e Indian School, donde actualmente están prosperando.
Rosy's Tuxedos es una historia de perseverancia, crecimiento y apoyo familiar. A través del trabajo duro, la dedicación y el amor por lo que hacen, Rosy no solo ha logrado su sueño de toda la vida de ser dueña de su negocio, sino que también ella y Mónica reconocen que su participación en los programas de apoyo empresarial de Fuerza Local les ha proporcionado una base sólida y recursos valiosos que han sido fundamentales para su éxito.
"Aprendimos que la educación es lo más importante. Todos los días hay algo nuevo que aprender en el mundo de los negocios. Aplicar ese conocimiento es clave para mejorar tanto la empresa como a nosotras mismas", comparte Mónica.

The prospective grooms and graduates who walk into Rosy's Tuxedos’ current location on N 75th Avenue in Phoenix may think they are just getting a suit or a tux, but the custom-tailored suits they leave with include something priceless — the confidence of knowing they will look and feel their best on their big day.
Who can these sharply-dressed celebrants thank for their elegant threads and peace of mind? Meet super duo Rosa Recendez and her daughter, Mónica Cortez — graduates of the 21st Cohort of Local First Arizona’s Business Accelerator Program. Currently enrolled in the 4th Cohort of the Executive Level Program of Fuerza Local, together the two are achieving Rosa’s lifelong dream of being her own boss.
A native of Zacatecas, Mexico whose formal education ended with elementary school, Rosa and husband Ignacio Ledezma immigrated to the United States with their four children in pursuit of a better life. A first business providing dress alterations, suit rentals and rosaries for special events launched in 2011. After three years of struggling to build a solid customer base, the store closed in 2014. However, during the experience, Rosa saw a gap in the special events market — catering to men on the milestone occasions in their lives with bespoke clothing and impeccable service. With this niche market in mind, Rosa refocused her energy, investing in an inventory of suits and tuxedos and operating from her home as she built up a clientele and worked towards her goal of a brick and mortar store.
In November 2017, Rosa was able to open a small location inside the Mercado de los Cielos Mall, and a year later, move to a bigger location in the Desert Sky Mall. In 2021, COVID-19 threatened to drive the store out of business. Daughter Mónica, who had always helped out in the store on a casual basis, came on board officially in 2021, putting her business administration degree to work to keep the business afloat.
Together, mother and daughter managed to weather the storm of the pandemic, along the way identifying weaknesses and adapting their business strategy for the better — only to abruptly lose their lease at the Desert Sky Mall location in April of 2023. This unexpected blow resulted in the loss of customers and resources, but once again, the two refused to give up. Applying lessons learned, particularly regarding the importance of understanding contracts, the pair reopened Rosy’s in November of 2023, setting up shop in the location at 75th Avenue and Indian School where they are currently thriving.
Rosy's Tuxedos is a story of perseverance, growth and family support. In addition to their hard work, dedication and the love for what they do, Rosy and Mónica believe the solid foundation and valuable resources provided by Fuerza Local’s business support programs have been fundamental to their success.
"We learned that education is the most important thing. Every day there is something new to learn in the business world. Applying that knowledge is key to improving both the company and ourselves," shares Mónica.
