Superar adversidades y situaciones difíciles, es una de las características que distinguen a Lilia Martínez, dueña de Las Islitas de San Blas, un restaurante mexicano que ofrece principalmente mariscos estilo Nayarit ubicado en la ciudad de Phoenix, Arizona.
Lilia Martínez es originaria de Querétaro, México, llegó a los estados unidos en 1989 específicamente a California llena de sueños e ilusiones por vivir una mejor vida donde se casó y tuvo una hija, durante su matrimonio pasó por violencia doméstica que la obligaron a huir a un refugio. Una época muy triste y sombría, pero que no la derrotaron porque tenía muy en claro que su hija merecía un mejor futuro y buscaría la forma de poder dárselo.
Es así como comenzó y daría sus primeros pasos en su historia como empresaria en 1995 cuando decidió mudarse a Phoenix sin dinero, sin conocer a nadie, pero con una maleta llena de sueños y ganas de salir adelante junto a su hija.
Su primera oportunidad surgió como mesera en un restaurante que en ese entonces se llamaba Meza’s que en pocos años cambió de dueño en 3 diferentes ocasiones, pero que la mantenían ahí por su excelente trabajo hasta que un día la ascendieron a gerente donde aprendió más sobre cómo administrar un restaurant.
En 2018 dio su primer paso oficial como empresaria, porque después de trabajar por más de 23 años en el mismo restaurante para diferentes dueños, este cerró sus puertas definitivamente dejando a todos los empleados sin un ingreso para sus familias. Para Lilia fue la oportunidad que estaba esperando por tantos años, ese mismo año tomó las riendas del restaurante y se convirtió en la dueña, fue así como en 2019 después de tener una dura batalla con la ciudad pudo cubrir con todos los requisitos y obtener todos los permisos necesarios para que Las Islitas de San Blas abriera sus puertas por primera vez.
“Ya no quería ser empleada, quería ser mi propia jefe y mejorar mi situación financiera. Además, le tenía un gran cariño al restaurante y amaba lo que hacía. ¡Después de mucho batallar para sacar permisos y cubrir todos los requisitos, por fin en febrero del 2019 empezamos a operar! – Lilia Martínez
Miedo, alegría y emoción fueron los sentimientos que llegaron en primer lugar a la mente de Lilia, ella sabía que desde ese momento había adquirido una gran responsabilidad sobre sus hombros.
“Fueron varios sentimientos encontrados. Primero la gran responsabilidad que me estaba echando a cuestas, sabía que ahora como dueña tenía que trabajar más. También tenía miedo de no poder crecer el negocio, tenía muchos retos que superar. Pero el sentimiento más fuerte era la emoción, la felicidad de ver mis sueños cumplidos, jamás olvidaré el primer día que abrí y empezaron a llegar clientes. ¡Wow! Es un sentimiento difícil de explicar”. – Lilia Martínez
El mayor reto para Las Islitas de San Blas y su dueña fue sin lugar a duda Covid-19 y la pregunta obligada ¿Como mantener un negocio que apenas tiene un año operando? Tomar decisiones difíciles como recortar personal, recortar horarios, mantener el negocio abierto los 7 días de la semana y no descansar ni un solo día fue lo que ayudaron a que este negocio y a Lilia a sobrevivir durante esta época de crisis para muchos negocios en el país y que muchos de ellos ya no existen en la actualidad.
No cerré un solo día, ni descansé durante toda la pandemia. Este obstáculo fue muy duro de vencer. Los gastos seguían, billes, renta, no pararon. ¡Esa situación me llenaba de tristeza, pero no me rendí y bendito Dios aquí estamos! – Lilia Martínez
Durante la pandemia Covid-19, Lilia Martínez pudo aprender mucho sobre administrar mejor su negocio, tomar decisiones y hacer los cambios necesarios y luchar por sus sueños y metas. Como mujer latina en ocasiones tuvo que nadar contra la corriente, pero su fuerte pasión y convicción le ayudó a superar cada reto que se le ha presentado y al mismo tiempo se ha convertido en un referente de fortaleza y admiración para las personas que la rodean.

Overcoming adversities and difficult situations is one of the characteristics that distinguish Lilia Martínez, owner of Las Islitas de San Blas, a Mexican restaurant that mainly offers Nayarit-style seafood located in the city of Phoenix, Arizona.
Lilia Martínez, originally from Querétaro, Mexico, arrived at the United States in 1989 to the state of California. Full of dreams and hoping for better life, she then married and had her daughter. During her marriage, she was met with domestic violence, a tragic situation that forced her to flee her home and find shelter. This was a very tragic and sad time. However, she overcame this tragedy of domestic violence and figured out that her goal was very clear; she wanted to pursue a better future, a future that her daughter deserved, and somehow, she would find a way to achieve it.
This is how she started and took her first step into becoming a businesswoman. In 1995, she decided to move to Phoenix without anything- no money and no knowledge of anyone- but a suitcase full of dreams and the desire to move forward towards a better future with her daughter.
Her first opportunity arose as a waitress in a restaurant. At that time, the restaurant was called Meza's. Within a few years, the restaurant changed owners in 3 different occasions. Because she was a great employee, past and new owners were happy to have her, and she continued to work there. Until one day, she was promoted to manager, where she learned more about restaurant management.
In 2018, she took her first official step as a businesswoman. After working for more than 23 years in the same restaurant, throughout different owners, the restaurant closed its doors permanently, leaving all employees without an income for their families. For Lilia, it was the opportunity she was waiting for. This same year she purchased the restaurant and proudly became the new owner. In 2019 after having a hard battle with the city, she was able to meet all the city requirements and obtain all the necessary permits to operate. Las Islitas de San Blas was ready to open its doors to the public for the first time.
"I no longer wanted to be an employee, I wanted to be my own boss and improve financially. Honestly, I had a special connection with the restaurant and passion for what I did. After a lot of struggles to get permits and meet all the requirements, finally in February 2019 we started operating!” – Lilia Martínez
Fear, joy, and a lot of emotions were the feelings that first came to Lilia's mind. She knew that from that moment on, she had acquired a big responsibility.
"There were several mixed feelings. First of all, the responsibility. I knew that now, as a business owner I had to work more. I was also afraid of not being able to grow the business. I had many challenges to overcome, but the strongest feeling I had was the happiness of seeing my dreams fulfilled. I will never forget the first day I opened, and customers began to arrive. Wow!! It's a complicated feeling to explain." - Lilia Martínez
The biggest challenge for Las Islitas de San Blas and its owner, with no doubt, was Covid-19 and the big question of “how do I keep a new business open? Making difficult decisions such as cutting staff, reducing schedules, keeping the business open 7 days a week, and not having a single day off, helped this business and Lilia survive during this time of crisis. Unfortunately, many other businesses in the country no longer exist today.
“I didn't close a single day, nor did I rest throughout the pandemic. This obstacle was very hard to overcome. The expenses continued: bills, rent, etc. They didn't stop. I was filled with sadness. However, I didn’t give up. Thank God we’re here!”- Lilia Martínez
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Lilia Martínez was able to learn a lot more about business management, making decisions, and necessary changes to fight for her dreams and goals. As a Latina businesswoman, she sometimes had to swim against the current, but her strong passion and conviction helped her overcome every challenge that was in her way. At the same time, she has become an inspiration of strength and admiration for the people around her.
