5 Greater Phoenix Businesses Doing Coffee Differently
Coffee is a connector of people. It can be used as a tool for motivation, it can paint a setting for intense conversation, it can be a way to express gratitude and appreciation, it can inspire a session of brainstorming for a project and we all know it can give you new life (if you drink enough of it!) Coffee is also an innovator. Check out how these folks are innovating the coffee scene and turning coffee into a tool for good.
All of the coffee shops mentioned below have incredible employees, delicious coffee in various forms and great service. In this little snippet we are zoning in on the things some coffee businesses have done that’s a little different from the norm. These folks saw opportunity to innovate and did. Here are five that stood out, but we know there are many more out there!
64 ounces of cold brew magic.
Blue House Coffee Goods
What’s different?
-These folks are a force for environment. They are constantly seeking ways to locally offset their carbon emissions. They even paired up with another local business to plant trees in Phoenix! They bike to the Farmers Markets!
-They haven’t had to let any employees go, in spite of closing their physical location due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lesser turnouts at their farmers market. Instead, they changed their focus and dove into new, innovative ideas to keep the public getting their coffee and their staff busy.
-They will deliver cold brew straight to your door, or you can opt for picking up your order at your local farmers market. Weekly, fresh, delicious coffee nectar straight to you, milkman style. It doesn’t get more local than that. You order it, in a few days you got a friendly barista on your porch with a caffeinated treasure.
Justice Java
What’s different?
-This is a mom and son team dedicated to fighting the unjust prison industrial complex through cold brew. As they put it “We make the best damn cold brew in Downtown Phoenix so we can provide the formerly incarcerated an opportunity to earn a living wage.”
-They formerly started their mission in March, right before the shut down and decided to completely close operations to keep their customers, employees, and the public safe. Once they come back in full force, they will have pop ups at farmers markets across the valley. So, stick around for their return, keep tabs on them here.
-They have a unique scene. They are not relegated to just farmers markets or coffee shops, they are looking to pair up with tattoo shops, head shops, unique events and intriguing partners.
-Since they just kickstarted their business they need to keep paying for some of the equipment and other overhead, if you want to help them out, check out their GoFundMe page!
Proceeds from this set of whole beans goes to groups supporting the Black Trans community.
Cartel Coffee
What’s different?
-They closed down right away and started serving coffee out of their front door with the same passion and tenacity as when their building was full of students and young professionals.
-These folks cut down shipping costs to just 5 bucks for anything. They want you to be able to get your coffee at home.
-They made the “Stay Home and Give Back” brew of beans which donate the proceeds to the Black Trans community. They routinely have campaigns like this to support their community.
-Cartel has been having a campaign where if you get a Cartel tattoo then you get free drip coffee for life! (Before August though!)
Peixoto
What’s different?
-Boldly serving up coffee safely (curbside and takeout) since the beginning of March. They pride themselves on making the decision to not reopen yet while still making sure you get every drop of coffee you need.
-They’re donating money from prints of BLM marches in Phoenix to the Black Mothers Forum to support their local community.
-The only place you can find canned coconut cold brew.
-Next level whole beans that change your experience of drinking coffee. The descriptions on the front of the bag seem like more of an artsy description than a cup of joe, but when you taste it, that artsy description comes to life!
One week of Jobot’s CSA which included “a ton of fresh @crookedskyfarms produce, along with Chef Joe’s homemade Swiss mornay, jalapeño hummus, and giardiniera.”
Jobot Coffee & Bar
What’s different?
-Jobot has paired up with local farms to host a CSA (community supported agriculture, where you pay a subscription fee and get great produce from multiple farms). Not only can you snag your morning coffee, but you can also pick up your groceries for the week!
-Jobot realized there was a little bit of a food desert in their area, so they essentially have a little grocery store in addition to the CSA program and delicious coffee. (And don’t miss out on their pastries!)
-These folks had to close to, so keep an eye out for when they are opened back up!
