Do You Need a Professional Email?
Are you looking for an email address that is specific to your business? Then you’re looking for a professional email!
A professional email does not use a personal email platform like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo; instead, it’s directly connected to your business. An example is contact@gingersec.com. While it may not seem like a big deal, there are several reasons why it is important to use professional emails for businesses and not personal ones.
The biggest reason to use a professional email is that you can set SPF, DMARC, and DKIM; these help secure your email traffic by addressing the spoofing problem. So what does that mean? Here are some definitions:
SPF
Sender Policy Framework, or SPF, helps prevent spoofing (someone using your domain illegitimately). Spoofing occurs when someone or something pretends to be something else in an attempt to gain our confidence, get access to our systems, steal data, steal money, or spread malware.
DKIM
Domain Key Identified Mail, or DKIM, is a standard DNS authentication mechanism, meaning it helps prove that you are sending emails from a valid mail server and that your emails are legitimate and not to be labeled as spam.
DMARC
Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance, or DMARC, is a way of connecting SPF and DKIM to ensure that there is a safe and legitimate sender behind the email.
Unfortunately, if you are using a consumer/personal email, there isn’t much you can do to implement these controls; you are dependent on Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. These consumer emails have “some” settings but keep in mind they need to be set for all of the customers, not just you and your business. Many times the End Licenses Agreements (EULA) of these consumer emails say they will not be responsible for any hacking or cyber-attacks if the emails are used for a business.
Professional emails also give you access to geo-blocking. This means that you can restrict where you get your emails from. This is essential because if you are a small business or even a large business in one geographic location (for example, Arizona) why would you need to receive emails from Japan, China, Russia, etc.? You can ensure you’re only getting the emails you really need and want!
Now let’s talk about attachment filtering. Did you know many email attacks are delivered in “zipped” or “password protected” extensions? This is becoming increasingly common because attackers know consumer email filters can’t scan those types of files for viruses. If you don’t have a professional email, you’re more likely to have an attack delivered to your email box.
These are a just few of the benefits that come with using a professional email over a personal email; and the best part? A professional email costs less than $100 a year!
